Revised data for the Yahoo Stores outage on Cyber Monday — now estimated at $6m of lost merchant revenue
Armed with better data, it’s time to update our analysis of the Yahoo Stores outage on Cyber Monday. As we noted in another post this evening, ComScore has published data on Cyber Monday sales — turns out, it’s only about 0.6% of annual revenue, overall (less than our earlier estimate of 1%). We still don’t have solid data on the “average” merchant’s revenue on Yahoo Stores, so I’m sticking with my $100,000 guesstimate.
However we now have some more information about the duration of the outage. The Yahoo SVP in charge, Rich Riley, reports that the outage was most severe for 7 hours, and that service came back to 100% after 12 hours. That’s longer than our guesstimate of a 6 hour outage, although we’re still not clear on what percent of attempted transactions failed.
Armed with this information, we now estimate that Yahoo Stores’ merchants would have done about $24 million in sales on Cyber Monday. Assuming that 25% of last Monday’s sales were lost, this implies $6m of lost revenue for Yahoo Stores’ merchants on Cyber Monday.
