“Don’t make your potential customers hate you”

You know what drives me absolutely nutty?

Blinking things on a Web page.

Animations and blinky ads make it extremely difficult to read. What part of “Don’t make your potential customers hate you” don’t the advertisers understand?

David Pogue, The New York Times, April 25 2007

At least as far back as John Wanamaker, brick-and-mortar retailers have understood that you have to make the customer happy and comfortable in your store. From storefront windows to dressing rooms to careful lighting, everything in the store is designed to welcome the customer.
The same rules apply for online retailers. When it comes to video for online retail, think it through — you want video that gracefully enhances the user experience. More importantly, your customers want video that gracefully enhances their visit. Take care of that, and their wallets will thank you.
